The Appalachian State University campus is currently operating under NORMAL conditions.
Emergency Response Plan: Organization
When an emergency affecting the University reaches proportions that cannot be handled by routine measures, the Operations and Executive groups will be called into service to direct, control and support the emergency operations of the University. In addition, certain employees working for the University fill positions that are considered "essential", and are expected to stay at work or report to work even under adverse weather conditions or other campus emergencies.
- The Operations Group is responsible for assessing the emergency and organizing personnel, equipment and supplies to respond immediately to the problem. Led by the University Chief of Police, this group will also be responsible for staffing the Emergency Operations Center once it has been activated. (See Notification Rosters and Procedures).
- The Executive Group is responsible for planning and prioritizing the long-term recovery of the University following a disaster or major emergency. This group is headed by the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs and reports directly to the Chancellor. (See Notification Rosters and Procedures).
- Essential Staff are individuals in certain, designated jobs that are expected to make every effort, using caution appropriate to the circumstances, to report to work on a scheduled or as-needed basis in order to provide essential services during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies. (See Essential Staff for a list of departments that have essential personnel staff).
- The Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs will make the decision whether or not the Operations Group should be activated. He/she will notify the Chancellor and activate the Executive Group when required.
- When the Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs decides not to activate the Operations Group, the parties affected will respond to the emergency using existing policies and procedures.
- Directors of the departments with essential staff (see Essential Staff) are responsible for establishing internal policies and procedures for their essential staff and may require these staff members to stay or report to work whether or not the Operations Group is activated.
